Limited-enrollment programs

Students applying for dental hygiene, mortuary science, nursing or radiologic technology must complete additional steps when you are ready to enter the program.

Dental hygiene program enrollment

Sandburg's associate in applied science in dental hygiene is a hands-on program that prepares you to become a dental hygienist in two years (including one summer).

Application period: Oct. 1-Feb. 15 for fall enrollment

Eligibility requirements

• Achieve a minimum of 23 admission points. Points sheet document.
• Complete prerequisite courses with a grade of C or higher in either Option A or Option B:
  • Option A:
    • BIO 101 — General Biology (or equivalent)
    • CHM 100 — Concepts of Chemistry (or equivalent)
  • Option B:
    • BIO 211 — Anatomy and Physiology 1
    • BIO 212 — Anatomy and Physiology 2
    • BIO 200 — General Microbiology

All science courses must be less than seven years old at application time.

• Select and complete the dental hygiene application.
• Pay the $50 non-refundable application fee.
• Submit required documentation:
  • Dental assistant certifications or work experience (if applicable)
  • Transcripts for prior degrees or required courses
  • Official TEAS/ACT/SAT scores
    • TEAS* scores valid for two years
    • SAT and ACT scores valid for five years
• Monitor mySandburg and your Sandburg email for application updates.

Additional requirements include a criminal background check (required before program entry), CPR certification, Hepatitis B vaccination and a drug test (for clinical/practicum/internship participation).

Licensed practical nursing (LPN) program enrollment

Sandburg's one-year certificate program prepares you for entry-level positions as licensed practical nurses (LPNs). LPNs work under the direction of physicians and registered nurses in various healthcare settings.

Application period: Oct. 1-March 1 for fall semester start

Eligibility requirements

• Meet with a practical nursing academic advisor to determine application eligibility.
• Complete prerequisite courses with a grade of "C" or higher:
  • ENG 101 — Freshman Composition 1
  • PSY 101 — Introduction to Psychology
  • BIO 111 — Anatomy & Physiology Fundamentals (or BIO 211 and BIO 212 for LPN to RN pathway)
  • NUA 101 – Basic Nursing Assistant (CNA)

BIO 111, BIO 211, and BIO 212 must have been taken within seven years of application.

• Select and complete the practical nursing application.
• Pay the $50 non-refundable application fee.
• Submit required documentation:
  • CNA certification or work experience (if applicable); if you have more than one year of clinical work experience as a CNA, complete the healthcare worker background check form and email it to vhinderliter@sandburg.edu for verification on the IDPH web portal.
  • Transcripts for prior degrees or required courses
  • Official TEAS/ACT/SAT scores
    • TEAS* scores valid for two years
    • SAT and ACT scores valid for five years
• Monitor mySandburg and your Sandburg email for application updates.

Additional requirements for accepted students include: Attending a mandatory program orientation, healthcare provider CPR certification, proof of immunizations and required titers, a TB test, a physical examination, a criminal background check and a drug screening.

Findings on the criminal background check and drug screen may void admission. Physical examination and drug screen results may affect clinical site placement. Positive drug test results (including marijuana) may prevent program completion and are not eligible for refunds.

LPN to RN articulation program enrollment

Sandburg's one-year LPN to RN articulation program prepares LPNs with an active Illinois license to complete the program and apply to our associate degree nursing degree to become entry-level registered nurses (RNs). Successful graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN licensure examination.

Application period: Oct. 1-March 1 for fall semester

• Pay the $50 non-refundable application fee.

    • SAT and ACT scores valid for five years

Associate degree nursing (RN) program enrollment

Sandburg's two-year associate in applied science degree in nursing prepares you to become entry-level registered nurses (RNs). Successful graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-RN licensure examination.

Application period: Oct. 1-March 1 for fall semester 

Eligibility requirements

• Complete prerequisite courses with a grade of "C" or higher:
  • ENG 101 — Freshman Composition I
  • PSY 101 — Introduction to Psychology
• Courses that can be taken during the program but advises to be completed before applying:
  • BIO 200 — General Microbiology

Application steps

• Select and complete the associate degree nursing application.
• Pay the $50 non-refundable application fee directly to the business office.
• Submit required documentation:
  • CNA certification or work experience (if applicable)
  • Official High School transcripts or GED
  • Transcripts for prior degrees or required courses
  • Official TEAS/ACT/SAT scores
    • TEAS* scores valid for two years
    • SAT and ACT scores valid for five years
• Monitor mySandburg and your Sandburg email for application updates.

Applicants are evaluated using a point system.

Additional requirements for accepted students include a criminal background check, drug screening and other requirements as specified by the program. Positive drug test results (including marijuana) may prevent program completion and are not eligible for refunds.

Mortuary science program enrollment

Sandburg's two-year and accelerated associate degree program in mortuary science is based on the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE) curriculum to prepare your for all phases of funeral service.

Application period: Rolling admissions; new students are admitted only for the fall semester each year.

Eligibility requirements

• Meet all Sandburg admission requirements.
• Complete the general application to the college.
• Complete the online Mortuary Science program application in mySandburg.
• Submit official high school/GED and college transcripts to Admissions.
• Submit proof of interview with a licensed funeral director.
• Submit official documentation of Hepatitis B vaccination three-shot series.
• The following courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher:
  • ENG 101 Freshmen Composition 1 (Must be completed prior to starting the program.)
  • CHM 100 Concepts of Chemistry
  • BIO 111 Anatomy & Physiology Fundamentals
  • BLA 202 Business Law
  • BUS 205 Management Fundamentals
  • ACC 100 Procedural Accounting

  • Meet with the mortuary science program advisor to sign the admissions checklist.

Enrollment is limited due to accreditation requirements. You must earn a minimum grade of C in all program courses. Failure to meet grade requirements results in dismissal with a one-time option to reapply.

• Schedule an interview with a licensed funeral director.
• Submit proof of Hepatitis B vaccination.

Radiologic Technology program enrollment

Sandburg's associate in applied science in radiologic technology is a hands-on program that prepares you to become a radiologic technologist in two years (including summer).

Application period: Oct. 1-Feb. 15 for fall enrollment

Eligibility requirements*

*There is limited space within this program. Not all those who are eligible will be admitted to the program.

• Achieve a minimum of 10 admission points. Points sheet document.
• Complete standardized test with passing score: TEAS test 58 or higher OR ACT 21 OR SAT 960
• Complete prerequisite courses with a grade of C or higher in either Option A or Option B:
  • Path 1: Anatomy and Physiology Heavy
    • MAT 109 or MAT 110
    • MDT 100
    • *CHM 100
    • BIO 211
    • BIO 212 (enrolled or completed)
  • Path 2: Physics Heavy
