Steps to Enroll

Step 1: Submit an Application

• Complete and submit a free online application.

Step 2: Apply for Financial Aid

FAFSA applications for the 2022-2023 academic year opens October 1, 2021!

• Create an FSA ID for the student and parent (if the student is claimed as a dependent). This is a one time process. The FSA ID gives you access to Federal Student Aid's online systems and will serve as your legal signature. This video is helpful in understanding the requirements to set up an FSA ID.

• Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Sandburg's Federal School code is 007265. The FAFSA is used to award federal, state, and some institutional aid.

• If possible, submit the FAFSA prior to December 1 to ensure that the aid you qualify for is available.

• Monitor your Financial Aid status through your mySandburg account and your Sandburg email account.

• Continue to monitor the process for additional requests and complete and submit any required documents on My Financial Aid.

• Once your award letter is posted, you may apply for a student loan if it shows you are eligible.  If you are interested in a loan, complete the three steps found under "Apply for Federal Student Loans" on our Financial Aid Page.

• Non-Dual Credit Students: There is a separate online scholarship application.

Step 3: Provide Course Placement Documentation

In order to register for classes, students must meet one of the following three requirements for both Math and Reading

• Send official or unofficial high school/college transcripts from all institutions attended, or high school equivalency exam results (GED/HiSET), which show sufficient coursework for college placement
  • Transcripts can be sent to transcripts@sandburg.edu
  • Note, college credit will not be granted from an unofficial transcript 
  • Course Placement Documentation - Math
    • Complete Geometry, Algebra I, and Algebra II with a grade of C or higher
    • Complete an approved Transitional Math course with a grade of C or higher
  • Course Placement Documentation - Reading
    • Complete the equivalent to Sandburg's Freshman Composition or Rhetoric I and six hours of college-level academic coursework requiring reading, with a grade of C or higher at an accredited United States College or University

• Send official ACT/SAT scores directly from the testing agency (ACT or College Board) which meet our minimum score requirements. Note, scores must be from an ACT/SAT test that was administered within the past five years.
  • Course Placement Documentation - Math
    • ACT Mathematics Sub-Score: 22 or higher
    • SAT Mathematics Sub-Score: 530 or higher
  • Course Placement Documentation - Reading
    • ACT English Sub-Score: 19 or higher and ACT Reading Sub-Score: 20 or higher
    • SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Sub-Score: 480 or higher

• Sit for placement testing (Accuplacer) and meet our minimum score requirements
  • Course Placement Documentation - Math
    • Accuplacer - Math (Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics) Score: 200 or higher
  • Course Placement Documentation - Reading
    • Accuplacer - Reading Score: 227 or higher

Accuplacer Placement Test Overview

An eighth-grade reading level as demonstrated by a standardized test approved by Sandburg is required for admission into developmental and credit classes. This requirement does not apply to Corporate and Leisure classes.

• This untimed assessment test covers reading and math and will determine the level of classes you may begin.

• We recommend that you prepare for this test prior to taking it. Practice tests and sample questions are available here.

• If you require reading assistance, contact Disability Support Services

• Register below or by contacting the Testing Center

Step 4: Register for Classes

• Schedule an appointment with an advisor to register for your classes. Note, you must satisfy Step 3, prior to meeting with an advisor.

• To make an appointment, call 309.341.5237 for the Main Campus in Galesburg or 217.357.3129 for the Branch Campus in Carthage.

• Dual Credit Students: Contact your Dual Credit Coordinator to register for classes.
