Dental Hygiene

For Chelsea Gibson, Carl Sandburg College’s dental hygiene program wasn’t just a great way to enter the profession of her choice, it was also a powerful social tool.
“I used to be kind of shy in high school,” Gibson said. “This program has helped me to blossom and become a new, better person and to hone my social skills.”
Gibson is originally from the state of Virginia, now living in Warsaw, and she has been working her way through Sandburg’s dental hygiene program. She said the experience has given her not only the tools she needs to progress, but a great support network as well.
“We start out with 30 girls who don’t know each other, some from different parts of Illinois and even Iowa,” she said. “Just from spending day after day with each other, we’ve become best friends and start hanging out and studying together.”
Fortunately for Gibson, the benefits don’t stop there.
“Sandburg is the only school in the area that offers dental hygiene and it is fairly close to home,” she said. “The program offers you the ability to work on a team with your classmates which helps as you’ll be working in offices with hygienists and dentists.”
Gibson, who plans on pursuing her bachelor’s degree after completing the dental hygiene program here at Sandburg, said her experiences here have helped lay the groundwork for her profession.
“The instructors are all so good to work with and very helpful,” she said.  “When it’s all done, though, what you really have are 29 new friends. I really enjoy this program.”
