GALESBURG—Sophomore guard Seth Wickert (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) scored a season-high 25 points and was one of five Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball players to reach double figures as the Chargers beat Monmouth College JV 80-72 on Monday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
Sandburg (13-6) led 36-28 at halftime and shot 27 for 33 from the free-throw line as it won its third straight game and for the fourth time in five contests.
Sophomore guard Zach Grover (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) and freshman forward Aaron Powers (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) each scored 12 points for the Chargers. Freshman guard Juwan Hubbard (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) scored 11 and freshman forward Mitch Wendling (Athens, Ill./Athens) added 10 points for Sandburg.
“We have struggled all season in putting teams away once we build a lead,” Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle said. “Tonight was no different. It was good to win a close game at the end, but we never should have been in that situation. We need to come ready to play against a very talented Illinois Valley team Thursday.”
The Chargers host IVCC at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium in an Arrowhead Conference contest.
