GALESBURG—Trevor Lay of Wethersfield High School has signed to play next season for the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team.
A 5-foot-10 guard, Lay joins the Chargers following a decorated career with the Flying Geese. He averaged 28.9 points per game during his senior season, helping him be named to the Associated Press Class 1A all-state first team and Illinois Basketball Coaches Association’s Class 1A/2A all-state first team.
Lay also was the Peoria Journal Star’s 2014 Small-School Player of the Year, becoming the second straight Journal Star POY to sign with Sandburg. Chargers guard Jared Entwistle earned the honor in 2013 after leading Illini Central to the Class 1A state title in 2013.
Lay helped lead Wethersfield to regional championships his last two seasons, including a school-best 30-3 record and Sweet 16 appearance as a senior. The Flying Geese lost in the sectional championship to Mendon Unity, which went on to finish third in the state. Lay ended his high school career with 1,774 points, second most in Wethersfield history.
Lay will join a Chargers team that is coming off the program’s first Region IV tournament championship and advanced to the NJCAA Division II national tournament for the first time in its history.
