FREEPORT—The Carl Sandburg College dropped its first Arrowhead Conference game of the season Saturday, splitting a doubleheader at Highland. The Chargers rallied to take the opener 5-4 before the Cougars came back to win Game 2 8-5.

After Highland opened with a four-run first inning, Sandburg (10-9-1, 4-1-1) scored all five of its runs in the sixth to take Game 1. Travis Windsor (Cuba, Ill./Cuba) scored the tying run on a wild pitch, and Brandon Smith (Imperial, Mo./Seckman) delivered the go-ahead hit with a one-out single to center field.

Sophomore right-hander Jeff Trokey (Troy, Mo./Buchanan) went the distance to pick up the victory. He allowed just three hits after giving up four runs on six base hits in the first. Trokey struck out five and didn’t walk a batter.

Highland broke a 5-5 tie by plating three in the sixth to take Game 2 and end the Chargers’ five-game unbeaten start in league play. It also snapped an 11-game conference unbeaten streak dating back to last spring. Sandburg struck first with a four-run second, but Highland plated five in its half of the inning. The Chargers tied it in the third on a solo home run by Noble Hampton (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central), but the Cougars scored three two-out runs in the sixth, thanks in part to three Chargers errors in the inning.

Brendan Butrimas (Mississauga, Ont./Philip Pocock) was saddled with the loss after going all six innings for Sandburg. He allowed four earned runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Smith went 2 for 4 with a triple, run scored and stolen base to lead the Chargers at the plate.

Sandburg’s next action is a nine-inning game at 5 p.m. today at Augustana JV. The Chargers host Highland in a conference doubleheader at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
