GALESBURG—After a season filled with close calls, Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball coach Mike Bailey hopes his veteran team can learn from those frustrating finishes in 2013-14.

“We were one of those close-but-no-cigars last year,” said Bailey, entering his eighth season as Chargers coach. “I think just the experience factor alone should help us get over the hump in some of those games.”

Sandburg, which opens its season at 6 p.m. Wednesday against Lincoln at John M. Lewis Gymnasium, finished 9-19 a year ago, but the Chargers led or were tied in the second half in 12 of those losses. They dropped nine games by single digits, and four times they were defeated by four points or less.

“The year of experience of knowing what to expect has given them all a comfort level, a little confidence,” Bailey said. “And they knew they couldn’t just take the summer off.”

The Chargers return nine players from last year’s team, led by versatile, 5-foot-10 forward Marysa Remick (Victoria, Ill./ROWVA), who paced the team in scoring (10.5 points per game) and rebounding (5.6) as a freshman while earning all-Region IV and all-Arrowhead Conference honors.

Leading the way in the backcourt are sophomore point guard Kaylee Moseley (Taylor Ridge, Ill./Rockridge) and sophomore Jordyn Chasteen (Canton, Ill./Canton). Sophomores Paige Martin (Farmington, Ill./Farmington) and Courtney Admire (Avon, Ill./Avon) also figure to see plenty of time in the backcourt rotation.

Joining Remick in a deep frontcourt group is lanky sophomore Destini Bollinger (Astoria, Ill./Astoria), who was among the team’s top rebounders last season and is very active defensively.

“She has a chance to have a huge year for us,” Bailey said.

The Chargers also will get a boost when Sandburg’s volleyball season wraps up as sophomore forward Lexa Mahr (Colchester, Ill./Macomb) joins the squad full-time. Mahr is the starting setter for the volleyball team, which continues play in the Region IV tournament Wednesday evening at Moraine Valley.

Bailey also is excited about a trio of 5-10 freshman post players: Alex Strom (Victoria, Ill./Galva), Julia Isenhour (Clinton, Iowa/Prince of Peace) and Sadee Hamilton (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg). Hamilton, a 2012 Galesburg graduate, came to Bailey late in the summer about playing for the Chargers after taking last year off from basketball. She earned all-Western Big 6 honors as a junior and senior, and she was part of the Silver Streaks team that advanced to the Class 3A supersectional in 2010.

“She said she wanted to give it another try, and she’s had a nice fall,” Bailey said. “Once she got back in basketball shape, she started to do some good things.”

With six frontcourt players standing at 5-10, Bailey likes the depth of his team inside, and he likes the strong bond it’s made in the preseason.

“They’re close-knit,” Bailey said. “They’re going to stay together, regardless of what’s happening.”
