GALESBURG—Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball coach Mike Bailey has announced the signing of 10 players who will suit up for the Chargers next season.
Jessica Lieber and Allison Mangieri of Galesburg High School; Brenna Combs of Abingdon High School; Kaity Perry of Astoria High School; Renae Stock of Davenport (Iowa) West High School; MaKayla Hartter of Washington High School; Nicole Bornsheuer of Bureau Valley High School; Sarah Linder of Canton High School; Skylar Mueller of Macomb High School; and McKenna Weaver of Limestone High School will take the court for Sandburg in the 2014-2015 season.
“This is an exciting class of freshmen to bring into our program. We have a big group of sophomores to replace, and these young women will go a long way toward doing that,” Chargers coach Mike Bailey said. “We have a good combination of players who can score, some who bring a lot of energy and some with good size. It’s pretty rare at this level to have a class with three 6-footers, so I’m looking forward to seeing them on the court.”
Lieber, a 5-foot-3 guard, joins Sandburg after graduating from GHS in 2013. In her senior season with the Silver Streaks, Lieber averaged 16.8 points per game in the regular season and a league-best 20.6 points in Western Big 6 Conference play. She was an Associated Press Class 3A second-team all-state selection as a junior and an honorable mention pick her senior season. The Illinois Basketball Coaches Association named Lieber a third-team all-stater as a junior and senior, and she finished her high school career with 1,415 points, sixth most in school history.
Mangieri, a 5-5 guard, rejoins her former classmate at Galesburg. She was a part of Streaks teams that advanced to the Class 3A Elite Eight in 2011 won a Class 3A regional title in 2012.
Combs, a 5-10 forward, also will play volleyball for the Chargers next fall. She helped the Tornadoes’ girls basketball team make a Class 1A regional championship appearance in its inaugural season.
A 5-9 guard, Perry averaged 11.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.2 steals for South Fulton this past season. She was a first-team All-Prairieland Conference and fourth-team IBCA all-state selection after helping the Rebels to a 28-6 record and their first sectional championship.
Hartter, a 5-4 guard, averaged 4.5 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals last season as the first player off the bench for the Panthers, who finished 26-4 and won their first Mid-Illini Conference championship in eight years. She also helped Washington win its first sectional title since 1977 before falling to eventual state runner-up Joliet Catholic in a Class 3A supersectional.
Stock, a 6-0 forward, averaged 10.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and a block per game in 2010-11 as a senior at Davenport West, where she played with current Chargers guard Mariah Bundy. Stock also was a second-team All-Mississippi Athletic Conference pick during her senior season with the Falcons.
Also a 6-0 forward, Bornsheuer averaged 7.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocks last season with the Storm, earning her team MVP honors. She was a member of the Erie Warkins all-tournament team, an All-Three Rivers Athletic Conference North Division honorable mention and a member of the Bureau County Republican’s all-area third team.
Linder, a 6-0 forward, helped lead the Little Giants to a 16-12 record as a senior last season, and she was selected to participate in the Canton Kiwanis Club All-Star game.
Mueller, a 5-6 guard, averaged 5.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.0 assist for the Bombers as a senior. She also shot 37 percent from 3-point range and was selected to play in the Canton Kiwanis Club All-Star game.
Weaver, a 5-7 guard, also will play volleyball for the Chargers this fall. In addition to being a first-team All-Mid-Illini basketball selection as a senior, she was a first-team all-conference pick and a Peoria Journal Star all-area honorable mention in volleyball after leading the Rockets to their first Mid-Illini title.
The newcomers will join a Chargers roster that returns guard Mariah Bundy (Davenport, Iowa/West), forward Julia Isenhour (Clinton, Iowa/Prince of Peace) and guard Haylee Swanson (Altona, Ill./ROWVA). Sandburg finished last season 13-14 overall and 5-6 in the Arrowhead Conference, advancing to the semifinals of the Region IV tournament.
