Sandburg Volleyball Tops Monmouth JV for 1st Victory

GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team picked up its first victory of the season with a 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 25-21 victory over Monmouth College JV on Tuesday at John Lewis Gymnasium.


Freshman setter Lexa Mahr led the Chargers (1-1) with 31 assists and three aces in addition to matching freshman middle hitter Caitlin McVay’s team-leading four blocks.


Sophomore middle hitter Caitlyn Godfrey had a team-best 10 kills while sophomore outside hitter Mercedes Sazone added nine kills. Sophomore libero Dani Lessard led the Chargers defensively with eight digs.


Sandburg took control of the first set with an 8-1 run to go up 20-15, and Sazone had a pair of aces during an 8-0 in the second set that gave the Chargers a 24-17 advantage. Monmouth scored the final three points in the third set to avoid being swept, but Sandburg pulled away in the fourth set with a four-point run to go ahead 22-17.


The Chargers open Arrowhead Conference play at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Highland.
