Sandburg Volleyball Sweeps Lincoln in Home Opener

Aug. 29, 2013
GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team won for the fourth time in its last five matches with a 25-19, 25-20, 25-13 sweep of Lincoln on Thursday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium in the Chargers’ home opener.

Sophomore middle hitter Caitlin McVay (Rockridge) led Sandburg (4-3) with a team-high 15 kills and four aces. Sophomore setter Lexa Mahr (Macomb) had 22 assists for the Chargers, and freshman libero Justine Bodenhamer (Avon) had a team-leading 14 digs. Sophomore outside hitters Erika Hibberd (Pekin) and Lorren Newingham (Pittsfield) each added five kills for the Chargers.

“We played a really nice game tonight, and I felt like we were a lot better than we looked the last time we played,” Sandburg coach Todd Winkler said. “We just have to continue to fine tune what we’re doing and keep finding ways to improve.”

The Chargers never trailed in the first set, using an early 9-2 stretch to take a 14-6 advantage. Lincoln (0-6) led 19-18 in the second, but the Chargers took seven of the final eight points, keyed by a pair of kills and an ace by McVay. The Lynx never threatened again after the Chargers used a 6-0 run in the third to go ahead 12-5.

Sandburg opens Arrowhead Conference play at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Sauk Valley. The Chargers’ next home match is 6 p.m. Sept. 10 against Black Hawk.
