DAVENPORT, Iowa—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team was swept by St. Ambrose JV 25-19, 25-18, 25-16 in the Chargers’ season opener Tuesday night.

Middle hitter Caitlin McVay led Sandburg (0-1) with six kills and three blocks in her college debut. Sophomore middle hitter Caitlyn Godfrey added four kills, three blocks and two aces for the Chargers.

Sophomore outside hitter Mercedes Sazone had four kills and three digs, and freshman middle hitter Sadie Van Norman had a team-leading four blocks. Freshman setter Lexa Mahr recorded 23 assists for the Chargers, and sophomore Dani Lessard had 12 digs.

“We still have a lot to improve on and still need to keep working hard,” Sandburg coach Todd Winkler said. “The nice thing is that it is early in the season so we have time to work on things.”

The Chargers return to action with their home opener at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday against Monmouth JV at John Lewis Gymnasium.
