FREEPORT—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team opened Arrowhead Conference play with a 25-18, 26-28, 25-20, 23-25, 15-8 loss at Highland Community College on Wednesday.

The Chargers (1-2, 0-1) lost despite 22 kills, six blocks and a pair of aces from sophomore middle hitter Caitlyn Godfrey. Sophomore outside hitter Mercedes Sazone added seven kills and two aces for Sandburg.

Freshman setter Lexa Mahr led the Chargers with 33 assists and sophomore libero Dani Lessard had a team-best 14 digs.

“Our inexperience on the court hurt us tonight,” Chargers coach Todd Winkler said.

Sandburg returns to action with an Arrowhead home match at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Sauk Valley Community College.
