MOLINE—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team picked up a 25-17, 23-25, 25-17, 25-15 Arrowhead Conference victory at Black Hawk on Tuesday.

The Chargers (6-5, 2-3) racked up 14 aces as a team, including five by sophomore outside hitter Mercedes Sazone and four from freshman outside hitter Lorren Newingham.

Sazone was also one of the key components in a balanced Sandburg attack. Sophomore middle hitter Caitlyn Godfrey had a team-high 10 kills, but Sazone, freshman setter Lexa Mahr and freshman middle hitter Caitlin McVay each added eight. Freshman outside hitter Courtney Learned put down seven kills for the Chargers.

Mahr dished out a team-best 31 assists, and sophomore libero Dani Lessard added 17 digs for Sandburg. McVay led the Chargers with four blocks while Godfrey added three.

“We played as well as we knew we could,” Sandburg coach Todd Winkler said.

The Chargers are back in action with home matches the next two nights. Sandburg hosts Kishwaukee at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Arrowhead play and takes on Elgin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in a nonconference contest.
