GALESBURG—Carl Sandburg College Theatre presents the drama “Dearly Departed” at 7 p.m. Nov. 7-9 in the Fine Arts Theatre on the Main Campus in Galesburg, 2400 Tom L. Wilson Blvd.

Set in the Baptist backwoods of the Bible Belt, the Turpin family proves that living and dying in the South are seldom tidy and always hilarious. Despite their earnest efforts to pull themselves together for Daddy’s funeral, the Turpins’ other problems keep overshadowing the solemn occasion. Bud (Dakota Carman, Galesburg) drops dead at the kitchen table, and firstborn Ray-Bud (Allen Lee, Knoxville) drinks himself silly as the funeral bills mount. Mama Turpin (Kimberley Bond, Galesburg) keeps the family together and puts her foot down on the financial ruin, stupidity, death, overbearing personalities, naiveté, compulsive overeating, infidelity, drinking, jealousy, lying and petty behavior that almost prevent the family from buying their father.

“This play allows our actors to engage in every bad behavior they’ve ever wanted to for the sake of telling a great story,” director Susan Sharp said. “Despite all the redneck vulgarities this family engages in, they take care of each other. Amid all the laughs, there’s a message about what it means to be family.”

Tickets for “Dearly Departed” are available before each show and are $5 for general admission and $2 for seniors and area students. Sandburg students, faculty and staff who show their College ID are admitted for free. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for each performance. The performance is not suitable for children under 12.
