GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College softball team lost 3-1 and 11-3 to Highland on Thursday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex on Thursday as the Chargers opened the Arrowhead Conference season.
Playing for the first time since March 15 and at home for the first time this season, the Chargers (4-12, 0-2) were held to two hits in the opener. Sandburg scored its lone run on Lindsay Lippert’s sixth-inning single. Sophomore pitcher Brooke Howard took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits in seven innings. She struck out two and walked two.
Highland jumped to a 9-0 lead after the third in Game 2, scoring three runs in each of the first three frames. Sandburg picked up all three of its runs in the fourth, with two coming on a single by freshman first baseman Lexa Mahr. Freshman Whitney Freeman was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs (three earned) on three hits in two innings.
The Chargers play a nonconference doubleheader at 3 p.m. Friday at Spoon River and are at South Suburban at noon Saturday.
