Sandburg Softball Splits With IVCC for 1st Arrowhead Win

GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College softball team picked up its first Arrowhead Conference victory of the season in a doubleheader split with Illinois Valley on Tuesday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex. A late Chargers rally came up short in a 4-3 loss in the opener, but Sandburg took Game 2 8-6.

The Chargers (10-14, 1-3) grabbed a 4-2 lead in the third inning of Game 2 on a three-run double by shortstop Jordyn Chasteen and added four more in the fourth to go up 8-2 and hang on for the victory. The first four batters in the Sandburg lineup – Ally Cordle, Shannon Kasap, Lindsay Lippert and Kaylee Moseley – each had two hits and scored two runs. Moseley also drove in three runs.

Pitcher Grace Cleair scattered 12 hits, walked four and struck out four in picking up the complete-game victory.

The Chargers scored twice in the seventh inning of Game 1 to bring the tying run to the plate, but Chasteen flied out to center for the game’s final out. Left fielder Hannah Johnson went 3 for 3 to lead a Sandburg offense that outhit IVCC 11-10. Brooke Howard struck out five, walked one and allowed 10 hits in seven innings to take the loss.

The Chargers return to Arrowhead action with a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Thursday at Sauk Valley.
