SOUTH HOLLAND—The Carl Sandburg College softball team pounded out 12 hits in a 7-1 victory over South Suburban before being held to two in an 8-0 loss on Saturday to split a nonconference doubleheader.

Leading 1-0 after two innings, the Chargers scored two runs in each of the middle three frames to blow open Game 1. Freshman outfielder Hannah Johnson (Chillicothe Illinois Valley Central) and sophomore pitcher Brooke Howard (Farmington) each had two hits and two RBIs for Sandburg (7-13). Freshman shortstop Jordyn Chasteen (Canton), freshman catcher Tygan Cole (Savanna West Carroll) and freshman second baseman Ally Cordle (Abingdon) also drove in a run for the Chargers.

Howard allowed just a run on seven hits to pick up the complete-game victory. She struck out three and didn’t walk a batter.

South Suburban touched Game 2 starter Lorren Newingham (Pittsfield) for five runs on six hits in four innings. Howard tripled in the second inning for one of only two Chargers hits in Game 2.

The Chargers play another nonconference doubleheader at 3 p.m. Monday at Robert Morris before hosting Illinois Valley at 3 p.m. Tuesday in an Arrowhead Conference matchup at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
