OGLESBY—The Carl Sandburg College softball team saw its season end Wednesday, as it was swept by Illinois Valley in the first round of the Region IV tournament. The Eagles took Game 1 of the best-of-three series 11-0 in five innings and scored three unanswered runs late in Game 2 for a 10-7 victory.

The Chargers (17-29), who won three of four from the Eagles in the regular season, were shut out on four hits in the opener. Sophomore Kaylee Moseley (Rockridge) had a fourth-inning double for Sandburg’s lone extra-base hit.

IVCC, which advances to the semifinals Friday at Highland, scored five runs in the fourth and six in the fifth against Chargers pitcher Whitney Freeman (Spoon River Valley), who allowed six earned runs on 11 hits in four innings.

Sandburg trailed 5-0 after the second and 7-4 after the third in Game 2, but the Chargers tied it at 7 with a three-run fourth inning on RBI singles from Moseley, Hannah Mixer (Burlington, Iowa) and Tygan Cole (West Carroll). IVCC, though, plated the winning run on a groundout in the fourth and added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth.

Cole led a 16-hit Sandburg attack by going 3 for 4 with a double, run scored and three RBIs. Moseley and sophomore Jordyn Chasteen (Canton) also had three-hit games, and Mixer finished with two hits and a pair of RBIs.

Freshman Megan Hobson (Limestone) went the distance in the circle for the Chargers, allowing six earned runs on 18 hits. She struck out four and walked two.
