GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team had six players score in double figures in a 97-77 victory over Iowa Wesleyan JV on Saturday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium in the Chargers’ home opener.

The Tigers scored the first three points of the second half to tie the game at 38-38, but Sandburg (3-1) pulled ahead for good with a 24-6 burst that made it 62-44 with 11 minutes, 47 seconds to go.

“I thought the difference in the game was we came out in the second half and defended them full-court and got them to speed their game up,” said Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle, whose team hit nine 3-pointers and won its third in a row.

Freshman guard Juwan Hubbard (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) had a team-leading 15 for the Chargers, and sophomore guard Seth Wickert (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) added 14 points. Freshman forward Javauntae Hicks (Rockford, Ill./Auburn) and freshman forward Aaron Powers (Chillicothe, Ill./Illinois Valley Central) each scored 13. Freshman forward Mitch Wendling (Athens, Ill./Athens) added 12 points, and sophomore guard Zach Grover (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) scored 11.

“People saw tonight how deep we are,” Twaddle said. “We don’t lose anything after we take out our starting five. This was the best game Javauntae Hicks has played all year. He really relaxed and let the game come to him.”

Iowa Wesleyan’s Kyle Warner led all players with 28 points, 22 of which came in the second half.

The Chargers’ next action is Nov. 16-17 at the Illinois Valley Classic in Oglesby. Sandburg takes on Waubonsee at 5 p.m. Nov. 16 and Oakton at 2 p.m. Nov. 17.
