GALESBURG—Carl Sandburg College recently received a $2,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to assist with summer reading programs for Warren County-area children who have recently immigrated to the United States.

Enrolled children will receive incentives such as T-shirts, book bags and Dairy Queen gift cards along with books and materials selected for their individual reading needs.

The grant will support children enrolled in the Warren County Family Literacy Project through collaboration between the Carl Sandburg College Literacy Coalition and the Warren County Public Library. The summer reading program began July 10 and runs through Aug. 31. Children are able to participate in small group tutoring and age-appropriate activities that strengthen language skills.

Warren County’s ESL population has grown by 170 percent in the past three years, and this program provides English language learners and their families with support in reading, writing, listening and speaking in English.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation supports initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $81 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 4.7 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.
