Sandburg Rally Comes Up Short Against Prairie Fire

Aug. 28, 2013
GALESBURG—Despite a pair of second-half goals, the Carl Sandburg College men’s soccer team lost 3-2 to Knox on Wednesday at Kleine Equipment Field.

Charlie Harned scored twice in a 95-second span early in the second half to give the Prairie Fire a 3-0 lead in the 51st minute. The Chargers (0-2-0) got on the board in the 67th minute when freshman Jalen Jones put home a cross from Carlos Viganoni.

Freshman Brandyn Murray notched his second goal in as many games after he scored off a restart in the 74th minute to cut Sandburg’s deficit to one. The Chargers had several flurries in the closing minutes but were unable to get the equalizer.

“If we could play the whole game the way we played the last 20 minutes, maybe things would’ve gone differently,” Sandburg coach Allen Eskridge said.

Knox grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first half on Nathaniel Logie’s header off a free kick. Sandburg had 13 shots on goal to the Prairie Fire’s seven, and the Chargers had an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal in the first half.

“We had far too many opportunities in the first half that we weren’t able to capitalize on,” Eskridge said.

The Chargers are in action again at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Indian Hills (Iowa) at Kleine Equipment Field.
