GALESBURG—Carl Sandburg College will offer three new certificate programs and one new associate in applied science program beginning with the 2013 fall semester to address the anticipated immediate need for trained workers for area railroad and manufacturing industries.
The College will offer associate in applied science and certificate programs for off-highway motive power electrical technician in addition to certificate programs in basic industrial and manufacturing maintenance as well as diesel power technology.
Sandburg developed the programs with the input of industry partners in its district. The curriculum for each program will reflect the skillsets needed for workers in their respective field, allowing graduates to enter the workforce with the abilities necessary to gain employment.
“Offering these programs is going to be a huge benefit for Carl Sandburg College and the community,” said Lauri White, dean of career, technical and health education. “Not only will we be giving students education and training for careers in these fields, but they’ll be in fields that have a need for jobs in this area.”
The off-highway motive power electrical technician offerings will provide students knowledge of electrical technology for locomotives and off-highway motive-powered technologies that are used by area companies such as BNSF Railway, Caterpillar, John Deere and Komatsu.
Basic industrial and manufacturing maintenance graduates will receive introductory skills and knowledge in electricity, welding and machine tooling. The diesel power technology program will prepare students for positions working with diesel-powered equipment in rail, power generation, earth-moving, agricultural, marine and heavy-duty on- and off-highway vehicle industries.
