OGLESBY—The Carl Sandburg College baseball team had a big day at the plate in an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader sweep of Illinois Valley on Tuesday. The Chargers blew out the Eagles 21-9 in the opener and held on for an 8-7 win in Game 2 to even their league record.
Sandburg (19-22, 9-9) pounded out 26 hits in Game 1, including 12 for extra bases. Connor Shaw hit a grand slam and drove in five runs, and Brian Pflum went 4 for 5 with three runs and four RBIs, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Josh Wade and Blake Durflinger each had four hits and a pair of RBIs, and Andrew Sprenke and Michael Harp also drove in a pair.
Trailing 7-6 in the sixth, Sandburg rallied with an eight-run frame and added seven more in the seventh. Nine Chargers picked up a hit and eight of them had at least two in the contest. The Chargers also had nine players with a run driven in and eight with at least a pair of RBIs.
Sandburg’s late awakening made a winner out of reliever Brad Moody, who allowed four runs on five hits in the final three innings.
The Chargers trailed 5-4 in the fifth inning of Game 2 before they scored three times to go ahead for good. An RBI double by Billy King, who finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs, brought home the go-ahead run.
Brendan Butrimas picked up the win after giving up six runs (two earned) on seven hits in five innings. Durflinger allowed a run over the final two innings to earn the save.
The Chargers are on the road in conference play again at 2 p.m. Wednesday for a doubleheader at Kishwaukee. Sandburg’s final home games begin at 3 p.m. Friday against Elgin at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
