BYRON—Nick Gustafson finished second individually and the Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team placed third overall in the 18-team PrarieView Classic on Friday.

The Chargers shot 311 as a team, finishing four shots behind champion and host Black Hawk and three shots behind runner-up College of DuPage. Gustafson fired an even-par 72 and came up three strokes behind medalist Ryan Schlueter of Black Hawk.

“Nick has been Mr. Steady all year and never gives up,” Sandburg coach K.C. Harding said. “He is the type of player that coaches spend years looking for.”

Sophomore Chad Hatch played his final eight holes at 1 under and shot a 77, and sophomore Cody Reiber carded an 80 for the Chargers. Freshman Joey Juergens posted an 82 and sophomore Mark Dockstader shot an 84 for Sandburg, which will play at PrairieView again Oct. 4-6 in the Region IV tournament. The top two teams advance to the NJCAA Division II national tournament.

"This team has the talent to be posting four scores in the 70s,” Harding said. "We have a nasty taste in our mouth, with four of the five golfers on this year’s team being a part of last year’s team that didn’t advance to nationals. I can’t promise you we will make it, but I can promise you we will leave it all on the course.”
