BYRON—The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team is in second place after Thursday’s opening round of the Region IV tournament at PrairieView Golf Course.

The Chargers shot 318 as a team and trail defending champion Black Hawk by 12 shots. The top two teams qualify for the NJCAA Division II national tournament, which be be played at Goose Pond Village in Scottsboro, Ala.

Sophomore Nick Gustafson shot 36 on the back nine and finished with a 4-over-par 76 to lead Sandburg during a cold, windy and sometimes wet first round. Sophomore Cody Reiber shot a 79, sophomore Mark Dockstader shot an 81 and freshman Joey Juergens and sophomore Chad Hatch each came in with an 82 for the Chargers.

“It took a lot of heart for Nick to shoot 76 after limping off the blocks today,” Sandburg coach K.C. Harding said. “I believe he was 3 over through his first four and got settled down to shoot a even par side of 36 on the back, which was the only round at par.”

Black Hawk’s Josh Bausman finished 1 over to lead the individual standings. The second round of the three-day tournament begins at 10 a.m. today.

“Black Hawk is a very good team, and to spot them 12 shots is not what we had in mind,” Harding said. “But the beauty of this tournament is it’s three days long, so it’s a long ways from over.”
