GALESBURG—Saturday’s upset of South Suburban helped vault the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team to 14th in the latest NJCAA Division II rankings, which were released Tuesday.
It’s the first time the Chargers (19-9 overall, 6-4 Arrowhead Conference) have cracked the top 20 under sixth-year coach Ryan Twaddle and the second time this season they’ve earned votes in the NJCAA poll. Sandburg tied for 21st in the Jan. 29 rankings.
Sandburg received 77 votes this week and is the highest-rated team that wasn’t in last week’s top 20. The Chargers topped Monmouth College JV 94-77 on Nov. 12 at home and upended South Suburban, which had been ranked No. 4 and was on a 10-game winning streak, 80-74 on Saturday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium for their fourth straight victory.
South Suburban dropped to No. 16 this week. Beaver County (Pa.) earned 10 of 12 first-place votes to retain the top spot.
Sandburg will put its four-game winning streak on the line at 7:30 p.m. tonight against Black Hawk on Sophomore Night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
The Chargers wrap up the regular season at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Kishwaukee.
