GALESBURG—After serving the community for more than 35 years, the Carl Sandburg College Children’s School on the Main Campus in Galesburg will close when current contracts for the spring semester expire June 6.

The Children’s School opened in 1977 as a laboratory school and clinical site for Sandburg’s child development and nanny programs. However, the College no longer offers either academic program because of a decline in enrollment in both. The nanny program was shelved several years ago, and the child development program ended in 2013. Space currently used by the Children’s School will be renovated into much-needed classroom space. The College has subsidized the Children’s School for many years, but it has sustained a revenue loss of about $750,000 over the past seven years.

“Coming to this decision was not easy,” Carl Sandburg College President Dr. Lori Sundberg said. “The Children’s School has been a great asset for our students, our employees and our community for many years, but the College simply no longer offers the accompanying programs and no longer has the resources available to continue to support it financially given the reduced funding we’ve received from the state in recent years. Ultimately, continuing to provide for the Children’s School would take away from the College’s core mission.”

The Children’s School serves 70 students for the current semester. Staff members were made aware Friday of the decision to close, and a letter to parents of students was sent Friday to notify them of the closing. The closing will affect 11 full-time and two permanent part-time employees. Employee positions will be phased out as needed, based on enrollment and attendance at the Children’s School.

“We’re incredibly thankful for the support the Children’s School has received throughout the years from the community and all of those who have utilized it,” Sundberg said, “and we’re very proud of the role the Children’s School has played for Carl Sandburg College.”
