CARTHAGE—Area high school students will take part in the Worldwide Youth in Science & Engineering (WYSE) Academic Challenge at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 11 at the Carl Sandburg College Branch Campus in Carthage, 305 Sandburg Dr.

Juniors and seniors from Hamilton, Illini West, Warsaw, West Central and West Prairie high schools will participate in the event, which is offered by more than 50 community colleges and universities in Illinois and Missouri. Material for the multiple-choice tests are drawn from senior high school and freshman level college curricula on subjects such as biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics and physics.

Each high school that enters a team of at least six students will receive a talent scholarship — a full-tuition scholarship for a full-time student at Sandburg — for the 2014-2015 academic year. Each school also will receive talent scholarships for subject winners in math, chemistry and English.

Individual winners will be recognized in each category, and schools will be recognized within their respective divisions, according to enrollment size. One student will be recognized as the overall individual champion. The top three finishers in each category will receive awards, and the top two will compete in the WYSE sectional competition March 17 at Knox College in Galesburg.
