Sandburg Baseball Uses 6-Run 1st to Get Split vs. Skyhawks

April 2, 2013
GALESBURG—Quick starts were the story of the day as the Carl Sandburg College baseball team picked up an Arrowhead Conference split with Sauk Valley on Tuesday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex. The Skyhawks rode a six-run first inning to a 6-4 victory in Game 1 before Sandburg returned the favor in Game 2 for a 13-6 win.

Shortstop Brian Pflum went 4 for 5 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored for the Chargers (5-8, 1-3) in the nightcap. Outfielder Josh Wade added three hits, three runs and a pair driven in out of the leadoff spot for Sandburg. Starting pitcher Jeff Trokey benefitted from the Chargers’ hot start by going the first three innings to pick up the victory.

Sandburg outhit Sauk Valley 7-6 in the opener but couldn’t recover from the Skyhawks’ early onslaught against starter Kyle Mesecher, who recorded just two outs. Reliever Brendan Butrimas held Sauk Valley scoreless on three hits for the final 5 1/3 innings. Pflum led the Chargers with a pair of hits and three RBIs.

The Chargers are home again Wednesday with a nonconference doubleheader at 2 p.m. against Spoon River.
