Sandburg Baseball Salvages Split at Parkland

CHAMPAIGN—The Carl Sandburg College baseball team held on in Game 2 to earn a split with Parkland on Friday. The Chargers lost the opener 12-1 in five innings before beating the Cobras 9-7 in the nightcap.


Sandburg (14-14) stormed to an 9-3 lead through its half of the fourth inning in Game 2. The bottom of the order did most of the damage for the Chargers as 6-7-8 batters Connor Shaw, Travis Windsor and Lucas Giertz combined for seven RBIs. Shaw drove in three and scored twice while Windsor and Giertz each drove in a pair.


Starter Cory Cook picked up the win after allowing three runs on five hits in three innings. Zach Zwenger followed with two innings pitched, and Jon Kupfert closed it out with a pair of scoreless frames.


Josh Wade and Brett Martinez picked up the only two hits for Sandburg in the opener. Parkland jumped to a 10-0 lead after two innings.
