GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College baseball team banged out 18 hits as it came back to beat Spoon River 13-10 in a nonconference slugfest on Wednesday afternoon at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
The Chargers (14-14-1) scored the game’s final four runs after the Snappers plated three in the sixth inning to take a 10-9 lead. Freshman Michael Judson (Maryland Heights, Mo./Pattonville) tied it with a single in the sixth, and sophomore Travis Windsor (Cuba, Ill./Cuba) scored the winning run when freshman Brandon Smith (Imperial, Mo./Seckman) reached on an error in the seventh.
Sophomore Lucas Giertz (Biggsville, Ill./Notre Dame) got the win in exchange for two innings of relief work. Freshman Ben Lauer (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart-Griffin) pitched a scoreless eighth, and freshman Tyler Johnson (Abingdon, Ill./Abingdon) worked a perfect ninth to pick up the save.
Every batter in the Chargers lineup had a hit, and five had at least two. Windsor finished 4 for 4 with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored. Smith and freshman Noble Hampton (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) each had three hits, two runs and an RBI. Sophomore Ryan Wendt (Red Bud, Ill./Red Bud) had a three-run homer that gave Sandburg a 9-2 lead in the fourth.
The Chargers will play another nine-inning nonconference game at 5 p.m. Thursday at Augustana JV before hosting Black Hawk in an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader at noon Friday.
