FREEPORT—After failing to hold a seventh-inning lead in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Highland, the Carl Sandburg College baseball team came from behind late in Game 2 to win 4-2 and earn an Arrowhead Conference split with the Cougars.

The Chargers (11-13, 3-5) trailed 2-1 in Game 2 before tying the game in the sixth inning on Travis Windsor’s single that scored Blake Durflinger, who led off with a triple. Josh Wade broke the tie with a leadoff home run in the seventh, and Josh Swank drove in Brian Pflum with a single later in the inning.

Sandburg’s rally made a winner out of Jeff Trokey, who allowed two runs on five hits in six innings while striking out seven and walking one. Brad Moody followed with a scoreless seventh to earn the save.

The Chargers took a 2-1 lead into the seventh inning of Game 1, but starting pitcher Tim Rossell was unable to finish off the complete game as the Cougars scored twice for a 3-2 win. Rossell struck out eight, walked three and allowed three runs (one earned) on just four hits. Rossell retired the first two men in the seventh before issuing a walk and hitting a batter. Both runners scored when Pflum committed an error at shortstop.

Wade, Durflinger and Andrew Sprenke each had a pair of hits in the contest for the Chargers.
