ELGIN—The Carl Sandburg College baseball team saw its season come to an end with a pair of losses in the Region IV sectional tournament Saturday at Elgin.
The Chargers dropped their opening game 14-6 to Prairie State before being eliminated with a 12-4 loss to Elgin. Sandburg finishes the season with a 19-29-1 overall record and a 10-9-1 mark in the Arrowhead Conference.
The Chargers jumped ahead late against Prairie State with a five-run seventh inning to take a 6-4 lead. Brad Moody (Chatsworth, Ill./Prairie Central), Brandon Smith (Imperial, Mo./Seckman) and Travis Windsor (Cuba, Ill./Cuba) had RBI singles in the frame, and two more runs scored on a Prairie State error.
The Pioneers, though, came right back with an eight-run bottom of the seventh and added two more in the eighth. Blake Durflinger (Gladstone, Ill./West Central) took the loss for Sandburg, allowing two runs on three hits in one-third of an inning.
The Chargers couldn’t recover against Elgin after falling behind 4-0 after three innings. Sandburg cut its deficit to 5-3 after a three-run sixth, but the Spartans tacked on six runs in the bottom half to pull away. Smith and Dean Ballenger (O’Fallon, Mo./Francis Howell Central) each had run-scoring hits in Sandburg’s sixth.
Sophomore right-hander Jon Kupfert (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) allowed 12 runs (six earned) on 15 hits in six-plus innings for the Chargers. He struck out six and walked one in taking the loss.
