BYRON — The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team opened its season by taking sixth place at the PrairieView Preview on Friday at PrairieView Golf Club.
Making his collegiate debut, freshman Caleb Newell (Monmouth, Ill./United) led the Chargers’ Red team with a 7-over-par 79. Sophomores Ryan Ballard (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) and Austin McDougall III (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) each carded an 82, and sophomore Dylan Mullins (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) shot an 83 as Sandburg Red shot 326 as a team. Other score for Sandburg Navy were freshman Jack Berlett (Washington, Ill./Washington) with an 86, sophomore Bryer Anderson (Elmwood, Ill./Farmington) with a 90 and freshman Tyler Inselmann (Delavan, Ill./Delavan) with a 96.
“We were hoping for better all-around scores, but I think our nerves got the best of us,” Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle said. “Our scorers came in a little high overall today, but we have a great group of kids who will keep working hard and we know we are capable of shooting lower scores. Our goal for this season is to continue the great golf tradition at Carl Sandburg College and we want to make the national tournament for the fifth time in six years.”
The Chargers’ next event is the Duane Chanay Classic on Sept. 5 at Byron Hills Golf Course in Port Byron.
