McVay’s 14 Kills, 10 Digs Paces Chargers in Win Over Warriors

KEWANEE—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team won its third straight Arrowhead Conference match and second in as many nights with a 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 25-13 victory at Black Hawk East on Wednesday.

The Chargers (12-10, 6-2), who also beat the Warriors in four sets in their previous meeting Sept. 10, got a team-high 14 kills along with 10 digs from sophomore middle hitter Caitlin McVay (Rockridge). Freshmen back row specialists Justine Bodenhamer (Avon) and Andi Hendrix (United) also had 10 digs for Sandburg.

Sophomore outside hitter Erika Hibberd (Pekin) had 11 kills and a team-best two aces, and sophomore setter Lexa Mahr (Macomb) had 11 kills in addition to handing out 36 assists. Freshman Sam Roth (Stark County) led the Chargers’ defense at the net with four blocks.

Sandburg, which has won seven of its last nine matches overall, plays four matches in the Harper Tournament on Saturday in Palatine, starting at noon against McHenry County.
