Lineup Change Helps Sandburg Volleyball to Sweep of Elgin

GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team swept Elgin 25-21, 25-10, 25-15 on Thursday night in nonconference action at John Lewis Gymnasium.

The Chargers (7-6) used a 7-1 spurt in the first set to go ahead for good at 17-11 and pulled away in the second set by winning 11 of 13 points for an 18-7 advantage. Sandburg trailed 12-10 in the third before taking 11 of the next 12 for a lasting lead.

Sophomore middle hitter Caitlyn Godfrey led the Chargers with 17 kills and three aces. Freshman middle hitter Caitlin McVay had 10 kills and a team-best four blocks, and freshman Sadie Van Norman posted one of her best performances of the season, picking up six kills. Freshman setter Lexa Mahr had 33 assists for Sandburg while McVay, Ashlynn Winkler and Ally Cordle each picked up a pair of aces.

“We changed the lineup and things were looking good,” said Chargers coach Todd Winkler said, whose team has alternated wins and losses in its last seven matches.

Sandburg returns to action with an Arrowhead Conference match at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Highland at John Lewis Gymnasium.
