GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team shot 327 and finished fifth in the fourth annual Carl Sandburg Classic on Thursday at Lake Bracken Country Club.

Playing on their home course for the only time during the fall season, sophomore Patrick Lewis (Williamsfield) led the Chargers with an 8-over-par 79 and finished a shot out of the top 10 individuals for the tournament. Sophomore Joey Juergens (Galesburg) added an 80 for Sandburg, while freshmen Ryan Ballard (Metamora) and Austin McDougall III (Pekin) came in at 82 and 86, respectively. Freshman Dylan Mullins (Metamora) added a 90 that didn’t count toward Sandburg’s team score, and freshman Bryer Anderson (Farmington) shot 102 as an individual.

Black Hawk shot 303 to edge Monmouth by three strokes for first place in the team standings. Black Hawk’s Josh Boushman shot 1 under and defeated Parkland’s Lyle Burns in a
sudden-death playoff to take medalist honors.

“Our guys played a solid round today, but the tournament overall was a big success,” Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle said. “I can’t say enough about the work J.R. Millar and Ben Olson at Lake Bracken did to help us put on a great event.”

Sandburg is back on the course at 1:30 p.m. Friday for the Dixon Classic at Dixon Country Club.
