GALESBURG—Back-to-back three-point plays in the second half by sophomore forward Mitch Wendling (Athens, Ill./Athens) and sophomore guard Juwan Hubbard (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) sparked the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team to a 66-63 Arrowhead Conference win over Black Hawk on Tuesday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

With the Chargers (12-7, 2-1) trailing 54-50 with 6 minutes, 40 seconds left, Wendling converted a three-point play and Hubbard followed with his own :29 later, and Sandburg never trailed again.

Black Hawk (10-10, 1-4) tied it at 60 on a pair of free throws by Sheawn Bedford, but Wendling’s layup off an assist from freshman guard Jared Entwistle (Mason City, Ill./Illini Central) put the Chargers back ahead for good at 62-60. The Braves had a chance to force overtime when Hubbard missed the front end of a one-and-bonus at :06.8, but Jeremy Blohm’s 3-pointer at the buzzer went long as the Chargers picked up their second straight conference win.

“It’s always great to get a hard-fought win, especially against a well coached team like Black Hawk,” Sandburg coach Ryan Twaddle said. “They’ve had our number the last few years, so it’s good to finally get a big win against them.”

Hubbard finished with a game-high 16 points, and Wendling added 11. Freshman guard Vince Gooden (Markham, Ill./Tinley Park) added 10 off the bench for Sandburg.

Marshall Bennett and Nygel Drury each had 11 to pace Black Hawk.

The Chargers look for their third straight victory when they host Kishwaukee at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
