GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team came away with a two-shot victory in an Arrowhead Conference match it hosted Tuesday at Lake Bracken Country Club.
Nick Gustafson led the Chargers with a 3-over-par 74 to finish in a three-way tie for medalist honors. Sophomore Chad Hatch followed with a 75, freshman Joey Juergens carded a 77 and sophomore Mark Dockstader added an 82 for Sandburg. Sophomore Cody Reiber posted an 84, which didn’t count toward the Chargers’ team score.
Sandburg’s 308 total was good enough to edge Black Hawk by two strokes and moved the Chargers into a tie with the Braves for first place in the conference standings. Illinois Valley was third with a 338, and Sauk Valley was fourth at 344.
“Today was a great win for us,” Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle said. “We got off to a rough start, but the guys were able to grind out some good scores that led to a win. I am very happy for these kids as they have worked very hard and deserve this win.”
Sandburg plays another Arrowhead match at 1:30 p.m. today, hosted by Black Hawk at Byron Hills Golf Course in Port Byron.
