OGLESBY—The Carl Sandburg College softball team got big contributions from several players as it picked up an Arrowhead Conference sweep Wednesday, beating Illinois Valley 7-2 and 5-3.
The Chargers (16-26, 7-11) scored twice in the fifth to tie it, once in the sixth to grab the lead and put the game away with a four-run seventh inning. The key hits in the frame were an RBI double by freshman Hannah Mixer (Burlington, Iowa) and a two-run double from freshman Justine Bodenhamer (Avon). A run-scoring single from sophomore Corinne Heins (Lowpoint-Washburn) in the sixth proved to be the game-winner.
Sophomore Whitney Freeman picked up the win after allowing a pair of runs on eight hits in seven innings.
Sandburg held on in Game 2 after taking a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Kaylee Moseley (Rockridge) drove in three runs, and Heins added her second three-hit game of the day.
Freshman Megan Hobson (Limestone) pitched six solid innings to earn the win, and freshman Katie McGee (Galesburg) worked a scoreless seventh for the save.
Sandburg will close its home schedule at 3 p.m. today against Augustana JV at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex. The Chargers, winners of five of their last eight conference games, will close the regular season at 3 p.m. Friday at Kishwaukee.
