DIXON—Sophomore pitcher Grace Cleair tossed a four-hit shutout to help the Carl Sandburg College softball team split an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader at Sauk Valley on Thursday.

After dropping the opener 3-2 in walk-off fashion, Cleair’s performance led the Chargers (11-15, 2-4) to a 6-0 victory in Game 2. Cleair yielded just four singles and a walk while striking out two to pick up the victory. Freshman catcher Kaylee Moseley led Sandburg at the plate by going 2 for 4 with three RBIs, and sophomore outfielder Shanon Kasap picked up three hits in four at-bats and scored twice.

Run-scoring singles in the seventh inning by freshman outfielder Hannah Johnson and Kasap gave Sandburg a 2-1 lead in Game 1, but Sauk Valley scored twice in the bottom half for the victory. The Skyhawks rallied without the benefit of a hit in the seventh, taking advantage of three of the Chargers’ six errors in the game.

Sophomore Brooke Howard suffered the loss after giving up just one earned run in 6 1/3 innings. She struck out five, walked none and gave up three hits (all singles).

Sandburg, which has won seven of its last 10, plays at Black Hawk at 1 p.m. Saturday in another conference doubleheader.
