GALESBURG—Freshman forward Aaron Powers (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) led four Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball players in double figures as the Chargers beat Monmouth JV 94-77 on Tuesday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
Powers scored 14 of his game-high 20 in the second half as the Chargers (18-9) blew the game open after leading 36-35 at halftime. Freshman guard Dylan Ervin (Washington, Ind./Washington) matched his season high with 15 points off the bench, and sophomore guard Zach Grover (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) also came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers and finish with 13 points. Sophomore guard Seth Wickert (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) added 12 and freshman forward Mitch Wendling (Athens, Ill./Athens) chipped in 11.
Sandburg finished 26 of 34 from the free-throw line, including 16 of 17 in the second half. The Chargers led 73-61 with 5:55 to play before going a 17-0 run to put things away for their third straight victory.
Reed Goodbred scored 17 to lead the Fighting Scots. Brandon Harroun of Abingdon added 10 points for Monmouth.
“We got off to a slow start, but I liked our energy level a lot more in the second half,” Chargers coach Ryan Twaddle said. “This was a really good win for us heading into a big game Saturday.”
The Chargers host No. 4 South Suburban at 3 p.m. Saturday in a nonconference game at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
