GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team closed its Arrowhead Conference schedule with a 25-16, 25-11, 25-19 sweep of Highland on Wednesday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
A trio of sophomores led the Chargers (19-16, 8-4) on the team’s Sophomore Night. Middle hitter Caitlin McVay (Rockridge) posted a team-high 13 kills, setter Lexa Mahr (Macomb) handed out 30 assists and outside hitter Erika Hibberd (Pekin) added eight kills in addition to a team-leading three aces.
Freshman middle hitter Sam Roth (Stark County) had a team-high three blocks at the net for Sandburg, and freshman libero Justine Bodenhamer (Avon) had 16 digs. The Chargers also got 10 digs from Mahr and freshman Andi Hendrix (United).
Sandburg trailed for just three points in the entire match, jumping to leads of 10-3 in the first set, 9-2 in the second and 13-6 in the third. The Chargers also had five runs of at least five points during the contest.
Sandburg honored Hibberd, Mahr, McVay and fellow sophomores Lorren Newingham (Pekin), Sadie Van Norman (United) and Ashlynn Winkler (United) prior to the match.
“It was a nice win for us to get on Sophomore Night,” Sandburg coach Todd Winkler said. “We didn’t play our best game, but we did what we had to do to win.”
The Chargers will close the regular season Nov. 2 at the Kankakee Triangular before opening Region IV tournament play Nov. 4.
