Chargers Sweep BHE for 1st Conference Victory

KEWANEE—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team swept Black Hawk East 25-21, 25-17, 25-19 on Wednesday as the Chargers picked up their first Arrowhead Conference victory of the season.


Sophomore middle hitter Caitlyn Godfrey led Sandburg (2-3, 1-2) with a team-high 11 kills and three blocks. Freshman middle hitter Sadie Van Norman added six kills, and freshman middle hitter Caitlin McVay had five kills while matching Godfrey for the team lead with three blocks.


Freshman setter Lexa Mahr had a solid all-around game with five kills, 23 assists and two blocks. Freshman outside hitter Erika Hibberd had a pair of aces, and sophomore libero Dani Lessard notched six digs for Sandburg.


“We came out and played tonight,” Chargers coach Todd Winkler said. “It was a big improvement overall, but we still have a ways to go.”


The Chargers will take part in the Southeastern tournament on Friday and Saturday in West Burlington, Iowa, with their first match scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday against the host Blackhawks.
