MOLINE—The Carl Sandburg College baseball team split an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader at Black Hawk on Saturday, winning the opener 9-2 before the Braves took Game 2 4-1.

It’s the third straight time the Chargers (13-14-1, 6-3-1) have split a league twinbill.

Sandburg jumped to a 6-1 lead in Game 1, scoring three times in both the first and fifth innings. Noble Hampton (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central), Zach Moss (Imperial, Mo./Seckman) and Dean Ballenger (O’Fallon, Mo./Francis Howell Central) each drove in a pair of runs for the Chargers. Moss also had three hits and scored twice.

Sophomore Jeff Trokey (Troy, Mo./Buchanan) went the distance, allowing just six hits while striking out two and walking two.

The Chargers were held to just three hits in the nightcap, getting their lone run on Ballenger’s RBI single in the first.

Black Hawk scored single runs in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth to beat sophomore hurler Brendan Butrimas (Mississauga, Ont./Philip Pocock), who struck out two and walked one in six innings.

The teams will finish their home-and-home set when Sandburg hosts the Braves at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
