GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College baseball team split an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader with Highland for the second time in four days Tuesday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex. The Chargers came back for a 2-1 walk-off victory in the opener before the Cougars took Game 2 5-2.

Victims of a walk-off at Augustana JV the night before, the Chargers (11-11-1, 5-2-1) put together one of their own with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh in Game 1. A hit by pitch and base hit to open the inning put runners at the corners for freshman Zach Moss (Imperial, Mo./Seckman), who tied it with a single to center field. Sophomore Ryan Wendt (Red Bud, Ill./Red Bud), who moved to third on Moss’ hit, scored the game-winner on a passed ball during the next at-bat.

The rally made a winner of sophomore right-hander Jon Kupfert (Peoria, Ill./Notre Dame) who scattered 11 hits in seven innings. He struck out five and didn’t issue a walk while improving to 3-0 on the season.

The Chargers led 2-0 after the third in Game 2, but Highland scored five unanswered runs, including three in its half of the seventh.

Sandburg’s next contest is a nine-inning nonconference game at Spoon River at 3 p.m. Thursday.
