OGLESBY—The Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team split a pair of games in the Illinois Valley Classic on Friday and Saturday. After falling to Waubonsee 79-78 in overtime on Friday, the Chargers picked up an 86-71 win over Oakton on Saturday.

Freshman forward Aaron Powers (Chillicothe, Ill./Illinois Valley Central) led the Chargers (4-2) with 18 points against Oakton.  Freshman forward Mitch Wendling (Athens, Ill./Athens) added 15 points, and freshman guard Juwan Hubbard (Rockford, Ill./Guilford) and sophomore guard Seth Wickert (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) each scored 12.

“After losing a heartbreaker in overtime in the last 7 seconds to Waubonsee on Friday, I was very happy with how we came out and played,” Sandburg coach Ryan Twaddle said. “We showed great maturity by putting a tough loss behind us and coming back the next day and giving great effort.”

Sandburg’s next game is 8:15 p.m. Monday against Eureka College JV at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
