Chargers Lose 2 to Sauk Valley in Conference Opener

GALESBURG—The Carl Sandburg College baseball team opened the Arrowhead Conference season with a pair of losses to Sauk Valley on Saturday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex. The Chargers (4-7, 0-2) dropped the opener 5-3 and Game 2 4-1.


Sophomore outfielder Don Giamanco (St. Louis/Mehlville) led the Chargers at the plate in Game 1 by going 3 for 3 with a pair of RBIs. Sophomore Tim Chick (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth) allowed five runs (two earned) on three hits in four innings to take the loss.


Sauk Valley broke a 1-1 tie in Game 2 with a pair of runs in the sixth and added an insurance runs in the seventh. Freshman right-hander Tim Rossell (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) went the distance for the Chargers, allowing seven hits while striking out six and walking one. Freshman catcher Travis Windsor (Cuba, Ill./Cuba) went 2 for 3 at the plate for Sandburg.


The Chargers will complete their home-and-home series with Sauk Valley when the teams play another doubleheader at 2 p.m. April 2 in Dixon.
