PALATINE—The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team surpassed its win total from last season by winning two out of three matches during Saturday’s Harper Invite.
The Chargers (14-11) opened the tournament with a 25-15, 25-12, 25-7 sweep of McHenry. Sophomore outside hitter Erika Hibberd (Pekin) had a team-best nine kills and sophomore middle hitter Caitlin McVay (Rockridge) added seven. Sophomore setter Lexa Mahr (Macomb) had 20 assists while freshman Andi Hendrix (United) picked up seven digs.
Host Harper topped Sandburg 25-16, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19 in the Chargers’ second match of the day. Hibberd once again led the team in kills, with 11, while McVay added eight and sophomore outside hitter Lorren Newingham (Pittsfield) had seven. Mahr handed out 23 assists and freshman libero Justine Bodenhamer (Avon) had 13 digs.
Sandburg closed the tournament with a 25-9, 25-17, 26-24 win over Elgin as the Chargers topped their win total from last year’s 13-19 campaign. Mahr led the team with kills and 20 assists. Hibberd delivered 10 kills and Bodenhamer had 10 digs for the Chargers.
Sandburg will play a nonconference match at Lincoln at 6 p.m. Tuesday before hosting Illinois Valley in Arrowhead Conference action at 6 p.m. Wednesday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
