GALESBURG—Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball sophomore player Destini Bollinger (Astoria, Ill./Astoria) has earned first-team All-Region IV District L honors for her impressive all-around performance this season.
Bollinger, a 5-foot-10 forward, is the first Chargers player to be named first-team All-Region since Taylor Young during the 2008-09 season. During the regular season, Bollinger finished second on the team in scoring (7.8 points per game) and led Sandburg in rebounding (4.9), steals (2.6) and field goal percentage (47.3 percent). She also tied Sadee Hamilton for the team lead with 14 blocks, and her 2.0 assists per game were good for second on the squad.
“I was completely shocked to find out,” Bollinger said. “It’s a great honor to have other people think that much of the way you play the game.”
Sandburg begins Region IV tournament play by hosting Elgin in an opening-round contest at 6 p.m. Thursday, but Bollinger will miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury. She helped the Chargers finish the regular season 12-13 overall and 5-6 in the Arrowhead Conference.
“Destini isn’t someone who will light up the scoreboard, but she’s able to affect the game in other ways,” Chargers coach Mike Bailey said. “With the work she does defensively, on the glass and with her energy, she was an impact player for us every time she was on the floor. I couldn’t be happier for her.”
